02/17/99 New Reaper Bot Challenge. It's 4 skill 0 bots, teamed against you with deathmatch 1 this time. This means you can refresh your health and armor but weapon stay is gone now.

Install the ReaperBot (rpbot) modification for Quake1.  You can get it from the Essentail Files section at http://redwood.stomped.com or from http://impact.frag.com .

For those clueless about the ReaperBot mod, it adds computer generated deathmatch opponents to Quake1. They are tough. This challenge puts you in a 10 minute free for all match against 4 wimpy skill 0 bots. Should be no problem except, they are all ganged up against you.

SETTING THINGS UP

Install and test the ReaperBot mod to quake. You will probably want to rename the "autoexec.cfg" file created in the rpbot directory. It has the annoying property of taking precedence over the autoexec.cfg file in the quake/id1 directory. The config.cfg file in the rpbot directory is ignored. If you have any tricky aliases or key binding script files that you exec at the Quake console, when you play quake, don't forget to put a copy of these files in the rpbot directory. Otherwise you won't have access to them. These usually are rocketjump macros etc. Once the game starts up, you can quickly type "exec myfile.cfg" to set these up before running reaperbot challenge .cfg file

Download the reaperbot challenge config file into your quake/rpbot directory.

gamrb2.cfg

Start up Quake1 ReaperBot with one of the following command line (in a dos window or by a windows shortcut)

quake -game rpbot -condebug

glquake -game rpbot -condebug

The -condebug option creates the log file "qconsole.log" in the quake/rpbot directory. New messages are appended to the end of the file so erase this file before you are log your challenge game.

Start the challenge by pulling down the console (~) and typing

exec gamrb2.cfg

You will find yourself in level DM1 with 4 reaperbots. At the end of the good game, capture the screen shot (F12) to document your score. If the reaperbots don't appear, try adding extra "wait" lines to the file. It took me several hours to construct a .cfg file that worked right. If you have any problems, let me know.

The demo file "gamrb2.dem" is also recorded in the rpbot directory. It is overwritten each time you run the game. Save the qconsole.log and gamrb2.dem file somewhere after you have logged your challenge entry.

Cheating

I know you guys are clever, can probably hack a fake log file and demo file so it looks like you generated 500 frags, or secretly run cheat codes etc. Don't bother. I don't want to waste my time on looking for this sort of stuff.  Let's keep this fun.

Submit your frag counts by e-mailing me at [email protected]

Please do not send me the qconsole.log or gamrb2.dem file unless I ask for them. Just hang on to them. You guys will flood my mailbox.

If grap the beat the top score, send in the screen shot if you want to.

The gamrb2.cfg contains the following

// gamrb2.cfg
//
// In this challenge you go up agains 4 wimpy skill 0 reaper bots
// Should be no problem for a quake expert like you.
// Oh, one minor detail. They are ganged up against you :)
//
// Your color is set to 15 15 so you won't be on the bot team
// The demo gamrb2.dem file is recorded in the quake/rpbot directory
// The log file qconsole.log is also recorded in the quake/rpbot dir
// Start the game with cmd line
// quake -game rpbot -condebug ...... other cmd line parms
// glquake -game rpbot -condebug ...... other cmd line parms
//
// Save the qconsole.log and gamrb1.dem to validate your score
//
// Other notes
// Delete the autoexec.cfg file in the rpbot dir so quake will use
// the one you set up in the quake/id1 directory
//
// A new config.cfg file is created on the rpbot dir every time
// you start the rpbot game, don't worry about it.
//
// take a screen shot (F12) of the final score and save it too
//
deathmatch 1 // weapon stay is off, heath and armor respawn now
